Sticks and Stones

Live in harmony with one another. Do not be haughty, but associate with the lowly. Never be wise in your own sight. Repay no one evil for evil, but give thought to do what is honorable in the sight of all. If possible, so far as it depends on you, live peaceably with all.

Romans 12: 16-18

Retard, Retarded.

Sticks and stones will break my bones but names will never hurt me.

There must be some chinks in my armour.

It's been three days or more and my heart still pounds out of my chest as I recall the events.  I no longer have prickly heat or tears.

After stepping away to bathe the children,  I am back to my normal resting state.  So here goes.

T'was the Friday before Christmas, when dinner was cooking
The children were watching Peppa Pig and not Mickey the mouse.
Mama was finishing her decaf coffee, checking email and blogger
Who knew one last look at facebook would evoke such ANGER.

One of my dear friends posted a very simple status update that immediately garnered two quick responses, quick witted responses.
The first was something along the lines of WTF? Are you kidding me?
The other was simply:
R-E-T-A-R-D

Whodawhatta?

(T.V. Time out)

Okay, pulse back in check.  What follows is my response to the individual who authored that response and the banter that gets created.  This is word for word so pardon the French.

Me: Mr. Blank you are absolutely the most assanine individual I have ever...you know what you are NOT Worth it. Perhaps you were trying to compliment my wonderful friend and compare her to my daughter Bridgie who resembles that remark. GET A LIFE.

Him: I've known Blank for almost 20 years. She was the maid of honor in my wedding and her husband was my best man. And vice versa. If you live in such a humorless world where it's all about you....too bad. Go fuck yourself.

Me: You find calling someone Retard funny. I call it cruel and uneducated. Perhaps you would like to say that in front of my daughter who has Down Syndrome. My daughter who is beloved by your friend and her children.

Him,well not Him, Him's wife:
hi Cindy. This is Blank, Blank's wife and Blank's good friend from college. I think this has gone far enough. No one set out to personally attack you or hurt feelings My husband and I are very kind people. We are not cruel or uneducated. It was a remark that was made to Blank and not to you. Again nothing cruel was intended and we are sorry you have such anger towards us.

Me:  I'm sorry that your family feels using the word Retard is appropriate. Merry Christmas.

After a night of contemplation on both sides the following transpired.

Him's Wife:
Hi Cindy, I can understand your anger and frustration as I am a mother as well. I do not know you and my husband did not invite you into a conversation about his comment yesterday. It was something you chose to do. I also understand your need to judge my family and I and think the worst of us. But you don't know me and are not familiar with any experiences that I have had in my life. I think you would be surprised to actually know who I am and know my experiences with working with children. My Husband made a remark that was mindless and obviously hurt you. But please know that at no point did anyone set out to offend or upset anyone . We all make mistakes as I'm sure you have done so at one time or another. We are sincere in wishing you a happy holiday and hope that you can forgive a mistake that was in no way intentionally made.
Me: You bet I can forgive and that I have been and will continue to analyze my behavior and continue to seek guidance in how to deal with such situations in my life as they will only continue. I will say that I was invited into the conversation as facebook is an open forum for anyone of her friends to see. If this experience has caused people to rethink their behaviors and to choose their words more carefully, then it was worth it.

(T.V. Timeout)

So, shall we say that the holiday weekend started with a bang?!  I am in no way proud of my behavior and will admit that I was unable to post to his response on the initial thread because my friend erased it hoping I would not see it so I went to his page and sent the angry message.  I can honestly acknowledge that this is truly the first angry response I have had to the oft used word since Bridgie's birth.  I usually share my experience with the word with Jerry, we analyze it, often chuckle and shake our heads, and think of how we might of responded if we were not so flabbergasted at the time.  Believe you me this does not fit any of the ways we have discussed.

I have two theories about the anger.  One is the numerous ill humored responses this man has had to my friends posts over the years.  He has always rubbed me the wrong way with his 'humor'.  Two is my high level of anxiety surrounding the holiday's and such.  Neither excuse my angry outburst but both shed light on why my normally calm, calculating, demeanor was erased.

Judge not, and you will not be judged; condemn not, and you will not be condemned; forgive, and you will be forgiven.

Luke 6:37

All experiences are learning experiences.  Sometimes we are quick to learn and sometimes it takes a while.  In Grand terms, this was a quick lesson and necessary for what was to come on Christmas Day.  And no I am not refering to the Christ Child.

While enjoying a family function, Bridgie and I sat on Grandmas Piano Bench listening to the sound of other peoples conversations, not really in any of the conversations.  One of Bridgie' s Uncles started asking me questions about Bridgie's progress and what the timeline looks like for walking and talking.  While finishing this conversation, I overheard someone, an adult, say "What am I retarded or something?"

I prefer or something...

The shaking and the anger were there again, but this time so was Bridgie.  I used this as my time to switch locations.

So, these things happen. Often.  And while I would love to spew my anger all over the place or use my fists to beat sense.  My children are watching.  And some day they will be Bridgie's primary caregivers and I want them to be content in these roles.  Soon, ever so soon, Erin will come home from school and ask me what retard/retarded means.

I am not sure what I will say to her.  It will depend on the situation and the context and the characters involved.  But I do know that I want to be calm and rational so that I can help her understand and process the world we live in.

While I still have seeds of Anger about the topic, I am willing and able to forgive those who have and who will say it in my presence.  I pray that I can find loving words to help educate and create compassion in those who choose to use Retard and other derogatory words and phrases in everyday language.

I will not judge.  Because I am not perfect.  I have sinned and continue to sin.  Yet God continues to love me, guide me, and work through me.

Judge not, that you be not judged. For with the judgment you pronounce you will be judged, and with the measure you use it will be measured to you.

Matthew 7: 1-2

Daisy Scout, Quilting, and a Naked Baby

Erin is a Daisy Scout this year, (girl scouts for Kindergartners), and she loves it.

I desperately want to try my hand at quilting, though I don't have the time, knowledge, or the right machine.

Here is a look at my first attempt at piece work and applique.

Looks great from a far....

Looks like I sewed the bottom while with my friend Jim...Jim Beam!

And of course the Naked Baby.  Sorry, Bridge could not resist.

In her spare time...

About a month ago Erin asked for the empty Cheerio box and this is what she made.

It is a house.

So, Saturday she was bored and saw that we had an empty Clementine Box, so she made a castle complete with drawbridge and moat.
She calls it her 'Castle out of recycling'.

Complete with bunk bed and ladder.

 Refrigerator and sink with faucet.

Armoir with hanger.
Desk and wall hooks.

We know she will be as tall as me by the time she is in 3rd grade. Can't wait to see what she's making then!!

(She had a little help from Dad, but all her ideas)

Crouperboy

"Faster than a speeding bullet! More powerful than a locomotive! Able to leap tall buildings in a single bound! Look! Up in the sky! It's a bird! It's a plane! It's Superman!".

No, you will not find Superman, Batman, Robin, Spiderman, The Flash, or any Jedi Knights around these parts.  But.............

You will find Crouperboy!!!!!

Eoin James has Croup, Again.  For the second time in less than a month.  This time I opted for the steroid shot instead of oral.  Crouper boy has super human strength and a gag reflux like no one you have ever seen.

Here are some pictures of Crouperboy, post steroid shot.

Chilling in the Vapor Room aka 'mommy's bed'.

Glassy eyed from his super human vapor rub.

Maybe those vapors are a little strong?

What more could Crouperboy need?

Mommy's bed. Check

Recent Happenings

Life is what we make it, always has been, always will be.
~Grandma Moses

Life has been slow and steady through the month of November.

Nothing 'exciting' or 'major' to report.  Just Normal.  Wait, did I say Normal, because we are definitely not that.

Here are some pictures from November about our 'Normal' events.

Fun at Quiet Waters Park after freezing pictures with our wonderful friend and photographer, Megan Evans.  Check her out on the link below:

Because, Life is Sweet.

'Balance, balance, balance, beam.  I am balance, balancing.
Walking in a Straight line.
 Gettin' better every time.
I might trip and I might fall but that's okay
cause after all I can get back up when I hear the call of my
balance, balance, beam.'

Gigi and Pee Paw paid a visit on the way home from their Florida 'Vacation'

Not sure who likes who more.

Experimenting in the kitchen.  Cauliflower Crust Pizza.

2 eggs, 2 C Cauliflower, steamed, 2 C Cheese

Sauce with Kale, mushrooms, and cheese.

Bridgie LOVED it.  Jerry said "Tastes like dirt.  You know like Beets.  I love Beets. so...."

I liked it but you have to eat it with a fork and I think I will halve the recipe next time for a thinner crust.
May add spinach to the crust or maybe even kale.

Erin had pajama day at school.  Even Mrs. S wore slippers!

Bridgie continues to amaze us and light up the world.  And Bite.

Erin lost her first tooth and the tooth fairy brought a silver dollar, a hello kitty notebook, and a plastic wand.

We had a day off from school so two of our favorite friends came over for a playdate.

Bridgie started eating raw carrots.  Or something like that.

Nora cut her hair and then got her first professional style.  Isn't she too stinkin cute?

All those beautiful brussels and you choose hershey kisses!?

Thanksgiving with all the Kelly's.
We had the best mashed potatoes EVER!

The nana's even did the dishes!

Santa Claus came to Town in Crofton and on TV. We cuddled up for the show....

And Bridgie bit Erin...

Eoin continues his obsession with Cars and dinosaurs, while watching TV.

4:14

Marine Corps Marathon 10/30/11
26.2 miles, 4:14:42

Jerry and Erin were able to track my progress in Sunday's race online.  They could actually see 'me' in cartoon form cross the finish line in 4:14 to which Erin enthusiastically replied, that's my bus number!

Funny.

When I pulled in the driveway there was a sign on the garage door that said way to go with the time
4:14
on it with 'that's my bus number' written as well.

I laughed and then I cried.  It was an emotional day.

Pulled onto 295 at 4:50 am en route to Crystal City only to skirt a just happened accident and then came upon a 'parking lot' that resulted from another accident.

I was calm.  It did not matter to me when I started this marathon.  I had a timing chip and I was going to complete it come hell or high water.

The accident was right by the exit for Pennsylvania Ave and about 50 minutes later we were able to exit.  I was ready for a pain in the neck goose chase trying to find my way but the exit for 395 S was right at the end of the exit.  Took me less than 15 minutes to get to Crystal City and Park.

Got on the Shuttle to the starting line around 6:30.  Arrived at the start to get in line for the Port-o-john by 7:10.  Warmed up, checked my bag, headed to the starting line and sat in another 'parking lot'.  This time it was a people parking lot.  30,000 runners on Sunday.

Race started at 8 am.  We did not cross the starting line until 8:13.

The weather was perfect as far as I am concerned.  I was freezing to start but perfect the rest of the way.  Beginning was quite hilly but I did not feel them.  I was gliding.  I bounced all the way through mile 15 when my feet started to ache.  So I prayed.  I prayed for strong feet and a strong mind.  I had been praying  most of the race.  Praying for the people around me and the people they were running in memory or honor of.

Praying
"I can do all things through Christ who strengthens me."
Philippians 4:13

Because it was all around me on people's shirts.  I was in good company.  Every time I started to falter I would recite that verse.

And I glided and bounced and followed my fuel plan and pain management plan to a T.

The run was uneventful really.  Pain there was pain but I knew that ahead of time.  I was doing this because of pain.  I was doing this to honor the grief, pain, anger, despair, depression, and fear of those who lost their son, brother, husband, nephew, friend..

This was not about me.  You see I hate the marathon.  It sucks.  It is miserable.  It is nauseating.  It is painful.  It requires way to much preparation time.

This marathon was much more than an athletic feat.  This marathon was a celebration.  A celebration of life.  A celebration of taking back myself, my health, my spirituality, a celebration of giving and seeing the joys of life.

Life causes grief, pain, anger, despair, depression, and fear in many different ways.  The Travis Manion Foundation and Team Travis and Brendan is just one example of how two families took their grief, pain, anger, despair, depression, fear, and agony and turned it into something positive.  It is very moving to think about if one allows themselves to.

Travis and Brendan gave all for the freedoms and liberty we take for granted.

Grief, pain, anger, despair, depression, fear, and agony have touched me throughout my life but it will never again define me.

4:14.

The number kept ringing in my ears as if it were more than just a number.

This morning I woke up and my first thought was John 4:14.

So I looked it up.

John 4:14
"...but those who drink of the water that I will give them will never be thirsty.  The water that I will give will become in them a spring of water gushing up to eternal life."

Water.

I am a Cancer.

Cancer is a water sign.

I have recently overcome my fear of the water.

The whole day and race I felt as if I was floating.

Calm, Collected.

I drank of the water all day on Sunday.  Yes, the water from the Marines.

But truly the water of the spirit.

Rest in Peace Travis Manion and Brendan Looney.

I know you know how your death has changed me, challenged me, and filled me with the Holy Spirit.

If not me then who.
